Mkhitaryan: ‘Childhood goal was Arsenal, Scudetto at 35 is precious’

Henrikh Mkhitaryan opened up about his long career, how it felt to win the Scudetto with Inter and the idea of leaving for the riches of Saudi Arabia.

The 35-year-old Armenian midfielder was one of the stars of the show in Simone Inzaghi’s title-winning squad this season, scoring two goals and providing 11 assists in 3462 minutes of action across 45 matches, being an indispensable part of the team.

Mkhitaryan still has two years left on his contract with Inter and is expected to remain part of Inzaghi’s squad moving into the 2024-25 season, having shown no signs of slowing down despite his age. He appeared in all but one of the Nerazzurri’s matches this term.

Mkhitaryan on his career and future

Speaking to Armenian TV via Calciomercato.com, Mkhitaryan first discussed how it felt to win the Scudetto with Inter.

“I have waited a long time for the Scudetto, it’s a precious trophy. I’m very happy because not everyone manages to win it at 35.

“I won’t dwell on it this result. For a player of my age, it’s a bit difficult to play, I try to rest well, train well, I try to give my best.”

He reflected on his previous goals and future plans.

“My first goal since childhood was to play for Arsenal, becoming a professional, and I achieved it. I still have a two-year contract with Inter, until 2026. I’ll see if I can play until then, then we’ll think about whether to continue there or elsewhere.”

Mkhitaryan commented on the idea of leaving for the Saudi Pro League.

“By bringing strong players, the Saudi Pro League are trying to develop football and strengthen the league, but I see it negatively because money is not important in this sport. The love for football is important.

“I have always had that love since I first touched the ball. I’ve always loved football for the game, not for the money. That door is closed for me, and I don’t even want to because the level of European football, the warmth and attitude of the fans are completely different.”

Finally, Mkhitaryan discussed the Armenian league and his son’s possible path in football.

“Unfortunately, I don’t follow the league much, but I watch it as much as possible. I have always been a fan of Pyunik, my career began there, I know that they are going through difficult times now.

“As for my son, he will decide whether he will become a footballer or not, I don’t force him to play football. When he touched the ball for the first time, he himself wanted it.”
