Vancouver Canucks’ Quinn Hughes nominated for NHL’s King Clancy Memorial Trophy
? Bob Frid-USA TODAY Sports

The Vancouver Canucks have named captain Quinn Hughes as their nominee for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for the 2023-24 season, the team announced Wednesday morning.

This honour recognizes Hughes’ exceptional leadership qualities both on and off the ice, along with his humanitarian contributions within the community. All 32 teams select one nominee from their team who makes a profound impact and dedicates time to making a positive difference in the lives of others.

For the first time, a distinguished selection committee, comprising of not just Commissioner Gary Bettman but also former recipients of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy and the NHL Foundation Player Award, will carefully evaluate nominees based on various criteria, including their ability to inspire, their active involvement in community initiatives, and the impact of their contributions.

The recipient of this prestigious award will receive a generous $25,000 donation for a charity of their choice. Additionally, they can secure an additional grant of up to $20,000 for their Club to support a related humanitarian cause — another new feature introduced this year.

Hughes’ nomination comes on the heels of his recent accolade, winning the Canucks’ Daniel & Henrik Sedin Award last night for his exceptional community leadership. This season, Hughes launched the Team 43 Initiative, where he provides four tickets to every home game for first responders in British Columbia—a gesture inspired by his grandfather’s distinguished career as a New York City firefighter.

As the Canucks’ captain, Hughes has played an instrumental role in guiding the team to their first Division title in a decade, as well as securing their long-awaited return to the playoffs after a 4-year absence. With his commitment to both his team and his community, Quinn Hughes will be a name that remains beloved in Vancouver for seasons to come.
