Chris Tanev would be an excellent fit for deep Dallas Stars

As we get closer to the NHL Trade Deadline on March 8, many are wondering which teams around the league are going to acquire the available blueliners from the Calgary Flames.

One of those players is Chris Tanev, who provides reliability in his own end, can kill penalties, block shots and is a right-handed defenseman. While teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins have been rumoured to go after the 34-year-old, one team that could use the six-foot-two defender is the Dallas Stars.

Currently 35-16-9 with 79 points, good for first in the Central Division, it’s hard to find any weaknesses in their lineup. But look at every team that wins the Stanley Cup, and they always have more than six NHL-caliber defensemen, mostly because depth and dealing with injuries are keys to championships.

On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss the Stars’ string of success and how adding someone like Tanev could make an already great Stars group into a Stanley Cup contender.

Tyler Yaremchuk: There’s a part of me that thinks they’re already the best team in the league, but how much better are you if you go get a defenseman and round out this group? I don’t think you need to make all the moves the Boston Bruins made last year, but you can probably accomplish what you need to with a second-round pick in this year’s draft?

Frank Seravalli: That’s where Chris Tanev comes in for me. I think he provides a different element for this team. He’s second in the league in blocked shots, and the Stars are 22nd. I think they could use someone who just does things a little differently than everybody else.

Playoff experience, toughness, all those things matter. A second-round pick plus something else, whether it’s a good condition that turns that pick into a first rounder. I mean, when you’ve been drafting as well as the Stars have, even then you’re probably thinking you’re in good shape.
