Canucks defenceman Tyler Myers to represent Canada at 2023 World Championship

Vancouver Canucks defenceman Tyler Myers will play for Team Canada at the upcoming 2023 IIHF World Championship, The Province‘s Patrick Johnson reported Tuesday afternoon.

Myers, 33, collected 17 points (one goal, 16 assists) and averaged 20:54 in 78 games with the Canucks during the 2022–23 regular season. He’s under contract through 2024 at a $6 million NHL cap hit.

Hockey Canada previously recruited Myers to play at the World Championship in 2010 and 2014, back during his tenure with the Buffalo Sabres. The 2023 Worlds are slated to take place in Tampere, Finland and Riga, Latvia between May 12 and 28.

The Sabres originally selected Myers in the first round (No. 12 overall) of the 2008 NHL Draft. Owing to his strong draft pedigree, Myers suited up for Canada at the 2008 U18 Worlds and the 2009 World Juniors, winning gold at both.

Myers made his NHL debut with the Sabres during the 2009–10 regular season, appearing in all 82 games and collecting 48 points to capture the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league’s top rookie. The six-foot-eight defenceman, who shoots left, spent parts of six seasons in Buffalo before being traded to the Winnipeg Jets in 2o15.

Although he enjoyed more playoff success in Winnipeg, including a run to the Western Conference Final in 2018, Myers left the Jets in 2019 to sign a lucrative five-year deal with the Canucks. He recorded 21 points in both of his first two seasons in Vancouver before dipping into the teens in both 2021–22 and 2022–23.

Through 918 NHL games over parts of 14 regular seasons with the Sabres, Jets, and Canucks, Myers has collected 88 goals and 342 points. He’s added seven goals and 15 points in 49 career Stanley Cup Playoff contests.

TSN’s Darren Dreger also reported the news of Myers representing Canada on Tuesday. He also indicated that Tyler Toffoli, Milan Lucic, MacKenzie Weegar, Scott Laughton, Lawson Crouse, Jack Quinn, and Devon Levi will travel overseas to play for the national team.
