Calgary Flames sign defenceman Daniil Miromanov to two-year deal ($1.25 million AAV)
Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports

The Calgary Flames have signed their newest player to a new contract. Just hours after being acquired by the Flames from the Vegas Golden Knights in the Noah Hanifin trade, Daniil Miromanov’s agent has announced that he’s signed a two-year extension with the Flames. Per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, it’s a one-way deal with a $1.25 million cap hit each season.

The compensation in each year of the deal is $1.25 million salary for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons.

The 26-year-old Miromanov was slated to become a Group VI unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of this season. Orignally an offensive-minded winger, Miromanov’s career has been wild. He came to North America as a 16-year-old and played two seasons of junior A in Ontario before catching on in the QMJHL in 2015-16 as an 18-year-old with the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. He played two years in Acadie-Bathurst, then returned home in his overage year to play in the KHL for HC Sochi, where coach Sergei Zubov converted him to a defenceman.

After spending time in the KHL and the minor-league VHL, he returned to the QMJHL for the 2017-18 stretch drive where he played with the Moncton Wildcats alongside Jakob Pelletier and current Wranglers blueliner Jonathan Aspirot. He subsequently spent time in Czechia (with HC Dynamo Pardubice), the ECHL (with the Manchester Monarchs) and back in Russia (with the VHL’s SKA-Neva and back with Sochi in the KHL).

He signed with the Vegas Golden Knights as a free agent in 2021. In parts of four seasons in the Vegas system, he’s amassed seven points in 29 NHL games and 68 points in 95 AHL games. He’s split time between the NHL and AHL in each of the past three seasons.

On paper, this guy is fascinating. He’s got size and skill, and at lower levels has put up pretty impressive offensive numbers as a blueliner. We’ll see what he can do as a Flame.
