Bruce Cassidy on What the Next Step is For Paul Cotter
USA TODAY Sports

Vegas Golden Knights rookie forward Paul Cotter is on a roll.

The young winger has scored a goal in his last three games and has become a crucial contributor to Vegas' lineup during this four-game win streak.

Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy discussed what the next step is for Cotter when he addressed the media after Saturday's morning skate.

"The next step for him is just that complete game, be able to rely on him in any situation," Cassidy said. "So that's consistency away from the puck or board battles. That's an area that he, for a bigger guy, he has to be more consistent on. Jack [Eichel] is so good at coming from underneath speed that when the wingers win the battles for him, a lot of good things happen. We saw it very recently in Minnesota, right? Marchy [Jonathan Marchessault] wins his battles. That's where Paul needs to be. Take pride in that part of the game. Value that part of the game.

"[When] a lot of young guys come up, it's all about: 'Getting my shot off, getting open off the rush.' And it's the little details. I think we got to get Paul to value that. And that's no different. All young guys go through that. So stick details away from the puck. I think his physicality's been there since Day 1. His reloading. So that's why he stayed in the lineup. He's finding ways to finish. I think he complements that line by going to the net, playing north. Knowing his linemates will take some time, when to get Jack the puck.

"Sometimes younger guys want to handle it a little more, and it's kind of like you don't want to discourage them from that, but it's like, 'Hey, you need to get the puck to those other two guys and get open. That's kind of what your role will be.' And I think he's bought into that most nights."
