Calgary Flames’ forward Andrew Mangiapane will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety after cross-checking Seattle Kraken forward Jared McCann, the league announced Sunday.

Mangiapane was given a match penalty and ejected from Saturday’s game vs. the Kraken.

The incident occurred midway through the first period, when McCann sprawled to block a shot, accidentally knocking Mangiapane slightly off balance. Mangiapane appeared to be frustrated with that, and gave McCann a cross-check to the upper back before then collecting the puck and firing a shot on net.

The Flames ended up winning the game 6-3. The two teams will face each other again on Nov. 20 in Calgary. The Flames improved their record to 3-7-1 while the Kraken fall to 4-6-2 on the year. Both teams sit in the bottom half of the Western Conference’s Pacific Division.

The 27-year-old Mangiapane has never been suspended before by the NHL.

The winger started the season with four goals and three assists for seven points, leading the Flames in goals. He hit career highs in goals and points in 2021-22, scoring 35 times and finishing with 55 points.

The 2015 sixth-round pick has spent his entire career with the Flames, scoring 99 goals and 83 assists for 182 points in 353 games.

Mangiapane is currently in the second year of a three-year contract extension he signed in 2002, earning $5.8 million per season.
