The Houston Texans Cut a Former First-Round Pick Before Week 11 Matchup

The Houston Texans had 2015 Pro Bowl cornerback Jason Verrett on their practice squad to begin the week. On Wednesday, Houston parted ways with him, per multiple sources. Verrett has not played in a regular season game since Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season. His return won’t come in Week 11.

Drafted 25th overall in the 2014 NFL Draft, Verrett’s tenures with the Chargers and 49ers were riddled with injuries. 2015 (his only Pro Bowl season) and 2020 were the only seasons where Verrett played at least 10 games. Namely, Verrett has battled injuries to his Achilles and ACLs.

The Houston Texans signed him to the practice squad on October 11. Head coach DeMeco Ryans coached him in San Francisco. Less than a week later, Houston has decided to let him go. It remains to be seen if Verrett and his seven career interceptions will get another show elsewhere.

What’s Next for the Houston Texans

Everything seems to be clicking for the Houston Texans in 2023, so it’s unlikely that they’ll regret this move. Without Verrett, Houston will try to beat the Arizona Cardinals at home this Sunday. Sitting at 5-4, the Texans are only one game back of the AFC South lead.

They trail the Jacksonville Jaguars, whom they’ve already beaten this season. After Arizona, Houston has none other than Jacksonville coming to NRG Stadium. When December rolls around, the Texans could be a first-place team led by a rookie QB. The future is looking bright.
