Steelers sign TE Scotty Washington, LB Caleb Johnson to practice squad
USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers had to make a tough choice with their starting tight end over the weekend.

Without Pat Freiermuth for the foreseeable future, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 , the Steelers are signing TE Scotty Washington, and LB Caleb Johnson:

Scotty Washington:

Washington went undrafted out off Wake Forest in the 2020 NFL Draft, signing with the Cincinnati Bengals and playing on their practice squad until being released after training camp last year.

Washington would then be signed by the New England Patriots, where he appeared in his lone NFL regular season game in 2022.

Washington was released by N.E. during the roster cutdown period in Aughst, and has been a free agent until today.

This move is likely purely for depth until Muth gets off IR, but I think it points to a larger concern with the other Washington in the tight end room:

Rookie TE Darnell Washington

The rookie wasn't featured much the passing game in LA, with Connor Heyward and "Hot Rod" Rodney Williams getting the majority of the reps.

Now Washington may be a rookie, and his blocking is definitely better than his receiving, but I think this move shows that he stills has a way to go before he can be viewed as a reliable option in the passing game.

Caleb Johnson

LB Caleb Johnson is the more experienced of the two acquisitions, having played in 38 career games, including seven this season with the Jacksonville Jaguars

With Pittsburgh welcoming the Jaguars to town this weekend, perhaps it's an effort to get some intel on their upcoming opponent.

Or maybe it means the Cole Holcomb injury that Coach T talked about today is more serious than we think.

We will find out soon enough.
