Steelers Running Back Jaylen Warren Exceeded His Own Expectations As A Rookie In 2022, Is Poised To Do So Once Again In 2023
Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports

There was perhaps no bigger surprise for the Pittsburgh Steelers this past season than undrafted free agent rookie, Jaylen Warren. The former Oklahoma State product was considered to be a long shot to crack the roster during the 2022 training camp but quickly established himself as the unquestioned number two running back behind Najee Harris.

During a recent interview with Missi Matthews posted on steelers.com, Warren took the time to reflect on his success in 2022 and discuss what his expectations for the 2023 season are.

"People tell me how great of a year I had last year, I look at it as just doing my job. Whatever helps the team make it to the Super Bowl, that's what I'm willing to do," Warren answered in regard to his rookie season with the Steelers and his goals for the upcoming season.

While Warren does not lack confidence in himself, even he had no idea that he would be as impactful for the Steelers in 2022 as he turned out to be.

"I've always believed in myself, but as far as being a factor in the NFL, that was a huge accomplishment for myself and I really exceeded expectations for myself," Warren said when asked about his level of play for the Steelers in 2022.

A Match Made In Heaven: How The Steelers Found The Perfect Third Down Back In Warren

One could argue that the most impressive aspect of Warren's talents as a running back has nothing to do with running the ball. While he is an extremely physical ball carrier, his strength in catching the ball out of the backfield and ability to perform well in pass protection allowed him to see the field extensively in 2022. Harris, in all likelihood, will continue to receive the lion's share of the carries in 2023, but it will be Warren who sees the field most consistently on third down.

Needless to say, the Steelers will be counting heavily on Warren to showcase his ability to be effective with the "little things" this upcoming season. When asked about his comfort with contributing as the team's third down back, he detailed how the coaching staff will be expecting big things out of him.

"What they're telling me is I feel like I'm going to get a lot more of that. I've proven myself that I can hold my ground in those situations. The good part about it is that I'm having fun. Pass protection is not a downfall for me, I enjoy pass protection and catching out the backfield. I've always been confident in that."

What Should The Steelers Expect Out Of Warren In 2023?

Different from his situation a year ago, Warren's spot on the 53-man roster is secure. He will play an integral role in the Steelers' offense and have the opportunity to present himself as one of the most dangerous backup running backs in the NFL. His downhill, though nose style of play complements the play of Harris in an almost poetic manner.

The duo is poised to return the Steelers' rushing attack to where it has been in years past. With an improved offensive line and ascending talent at quarterback, they may be well on their way to doing so.

Ultimately, while Warren and Harris play the same position and often find themselves fighting for snaps, the two should be thankful that the Steelers have finally been able to land a pair of immensely talented running backs. The team is only a few years removed from the 2017 season in which former running back, Le'Veon Bell ran the ball a staggering 321 times.

Fortunately, the Steelers find themselves in a situation in which handing the ball off to the same player that many times is not necessary. Having both Harris and Warren split carries will do wonders for their long-term longevity. In terms of what fans should expect out of them in 2023, do not be surprised if they end up being the focal points of the offense. A strong run game and dominant defense may end up being the recipe for an AFC North Title.
