Steelers Make Surprising Move Declining Najee Harris' 5th Year Option
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Najee Harris in the first round (24th overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft, and since joining the team, he's made a significant impact. In his rookie season, Harris showcased his versatility by earning a Pro Bowl nod as the featured back, while also contributing as a receiver. He amassed 1,200 rushing yards on 307 carries and seven touchdowns, along with 467 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns.

Over the following two seasons, Harris continued to excel, surpassing 1,000 rushing yards each year. With the arrival of Arthur Smith as the new offensive coordinator, Harris' workload is expected to increase, and the offense is likely to tailor its approach to capitalize on his talents.

There was speculation surrounding whether the Steelers would exercise Harris' fifth-year option, and today, it has been confirmed that they will not do so. According to a report from Steelers insider Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh wants to wait and see how Harris performs under Smith's guidance.

Harris initially inked a four-year rookie deal worth $13 million. Now, with the Steelers not committing to exercise the fifth-year option on Harris' contract, he's set to miss out on a hefty $6.79 million in 2025. This move comes as a surprise to many Steelers fans who felt certain that the team would go ahead and pick up his option.

The Steelers' choice not to extend Harris' contract for a fifth year carries significant repercussions. Without this extension, Harris is now set to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason, potentially leaving a notable void in Pittsburgh's backfield.

Despite facing criticism from some corners of the fan base, Harris has consistently excelled on the field, establishing himself as a key contributor to the Steelers' offense. His performance has been consistently impressive, demonstrating his ability to shoulder the offensive workload for Pittsburgh.

With the appointment of Smith as the new offensive coordinator, expectations are high for Harris heading into the upcoming 2024 season. Many anticipate a breakout year for the talented running back under Smith's tutelage.

With the Steelers not taking on his option, it should motivate Harris in 2024. This choice is poised to fuel Harris' determination and drive as he aims to make an even greater impact on the field.

Steelers' 2024 Draft Hints At Massive Year For Najee Harris And Jaylen Warren

The Steelers appear to have hit a grand slam with their 2024 draft, earning unanimous praise from pundits across the board. Their selections received exceptionally high grades, reflecting a strategic focus on fortifying the offensive line.

In the first round, they snagged Troy Fautanu, a promising offensive tackle poised to bolster their front line. This was followed by the addition of Zach Frazier, a center with immense potential, in the second round. Mason McCormick, drafted in the fourth round, further solidifies their commitment to beefing up the trenches.

Recognizing the pivotal role of a sturdy offensive line in executing Smith's vision for the team, the Steelers made it a priority to address this area of need. Despite recent struggles, Pittsburgh has been proactive in rectifying the situation, and the 2024 draft selections represent a significant step in the right direction.

The revamped offensive line holds promise for enhancing the productivity of star running backs like Harris and Jaylen Warren. Both coming off strong 2023 seasons, their success hinges on the ability to find running lanes and unleash their full potential on the field.

With Harris's fifth-year option declined, Steelers fans are brimming with excitement at the prospect of returning to the smash-mouth, ground-and-pound style of Steeler football with an even more motivated running back. With Harris leading the charge, anticipation is high for a resurgence in Pittsburgh's offensive prowess, fueled by the renewed strength of their offensive line.
