Steelers make surprising cut at thin position

The Steelers are continuing to shape their roster for the 2023 season, but it came in the form of a cut on Wednesday.

Pittsburgh informed veteran CB Arthur Maulet, who has been with the team since 2021, that he's being released.

It comes as a surprise because the Steelers are already thin at slot corner and cutting Maulet makes it even thinner.

Maulet, who is 29, is coming off the best season of his career as well, posting 59 tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble, one interception and three passes defensed.

Pittsburgh did sign CB Chandon Sullivan, who is now the likely starter at slot corner, to a one-year deal during the final day of the 2023 NFL Draft, but the team should still add to the room.

Sullivan, who is 26, certainly helps the Steelers get younger at the position. He had 60 tackles, seven passes defensed and one fumble recovery in 2022.

However, if he can get back to his 2021 level of play when he had three interceptions, it will be a win for both sides as Sullivan is now on his fourth team in six years.

Maybe general manager Omar Khan has another trick or two up his sleeve as his aggressive offseason continues in Pittsburgh.
