Should the Colts be concerned about Matt Gay's recent struggles?
Robert Scheer/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK

Early in the season, the Indianapolis Colts saw their free agent acquisition, Matt Gay, be mister reliable.

As of late, though, that hasn't been the case, and he is undoubtedly in a slump.

After missing only two of his first 18 attempts on the season, Gay has now missed three of his last six field goals. This offseason, the Colts handed Gay the largest free agent deal in history for a kicker.

Which makes his recent slump hurt even more. The team's recent injury report seemed to give a potential reason for the recent struggles, as the team listed a hip injury for Gay following their walkthrough on Wednesday.

If this hip injury is a major reason for Gay's recent performance, the team has to consider other options if he needs to miss time. They do not have another kicker on the roster or their practice squad. Which means they would need to look elsewhere to replace Gay.

He seems like the kind of player who wants to fight through the pain and continue playing. And while that is admirable, the Colts have to ask themselves if the current level of play coming from an injured Gay is good enough to allow him to play through it. If they decide it is not, a move has to be made to give them the option to elevate a kicker for game day if need be.
