Saints rookie joins Wil Lutz on franchise record list
© Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

The New Orleans Saints have caught flack this season for their special teams decisions from the offseason. One of them hasn't bitten them as bad as the other. Rookie kicker Blake Grupe has been a solid option as their starting boot.

The team's choice to move on from veteran Wil Lutz was a noteworthy one. Lutz had spent six seasons in New Orleans.

The Saints liked what they had in the young kicker, though, and they could not keep both. Therefore, Lutz headed to Sean Payton's Denver Broncos. Now, Grupe has made some Saints franchise history that puts him on a list with Lutz.

With one of his extra point attempt makes on Sunday, Grupe became only the second player in franchise history to score 100 points in his rookie season.

Of course, Lutz is the other one in 2016.

Lutz has had some rookie woes and minor errors, but overall, there are many worse kicker situations to be in than New Orleans' in 2023.

The Saints were high on Grupe during training camp, and his abilities have shown up pretty often in his first year in the NFL. They hope that he's their starting kicker for years to come.
