Report: Russell Wilson declined to be traded to Eagles, Commanders

Russell Wilson has a no-trade clause in his contract, and it sounds like he took full advantage of it before he was traded to the Denver Broncos.

Several teams tried to acquire Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks. The Philadelphia Eagles were one of them, but apparently Wilson was not interested. Jake Heaps of Seattle Sports 710 said during a Tuesday appearance night on “Broncos Country Tonight” that the Eagles made an offer for Wilson during the Scouting Combine last week. It’s unclear if the offer was better than Denver’s, but Wilson informed the Seahawks that he would not waive his no-trade clause for Philly.

The same was true for the Washington Commanders.

“The reason why this (trade) happened so quickly and progressed quickly is because, one, Denver was working on this behind the scenes for a while now,” Heaps said, via Brandon Lee Gowton of Bleeding Green Nation. “The other reason is because the Seahawks were limited, guys. There’s not real leverage if there’s only a certain amount of teams that Russell Wilson’s actually interested in or be willing to waive his no-trade clause for.”

It sounds like Wilson was determined to play for the Broncos. Given the circumstances, the Seahawks actually got a solid return for their franchise quarterback.

The Eagles have three first-round picks in this year’s draft, so they probably would have been able to best Denver’s offer. It’s worth noting that another star quarterback supposedly did not want to play for them, either. It looks like they will be sticking with Jalen Hurts.
