Report: Lions will attempt to extend QB Jared Goff this offseason

Quarterback Jared Goff is one reason the Detroit Lions are in the NFC Championship Game for the first time since 1991, so it makes sense for the organization to hold on to him.

Per NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, Detroit will discuss extending Goff — who's entering the final year of a four-year, $134M contract — this offseason.

"The Detroit Lions never considered him to be a bridge quarterback, always thought he would be the franchise guy," Rapoport said Sunday on "NFL GameDay." "My understanding is after they get to the Super Bowl, this offseason, the Lions and Goff's representation are expected to begin talks on a contract extension to make him one of the higher-paid quarterbacks in the NFL."

Spotrac estimates the 29-year-old's market value is a four-year deal worth $37.4M annually, 14th at his position. The Lions will have $61.1M in cap room, meaning they can afford this.

In 17 regular-season games, he finished second in the league in passing yards (4,575), fourth in passing TDs (30) and 11th in QBR (60.3). In the playoffs, he's completed 74.3 percent of his passes for three TDs and no picks. Along with Goff, the Lions have a talented young core that includes stars such as wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, defensive end Aidan Hutchinson and rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Keeping it together could help the organization win its first Super Bowl title.

If the Lions beat the 49ers in San Francisco on Sunday, they'll make their first Super Bowl in franchise history. Goff — who helped the Los Angeles Rams earn an NFC title in 2018 — will also become the fifth QB in league history to lead multiple organizations to the Super Bowl; the others are Peyton Manning, Kurt Warner, Tom Brady and Craig Morton.
