Raiders fire head coach Josh McDaniels, GM David Ziegler

It is being reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter that linebackers coach Antonio Pierce will take over as the team's interim head coach.

Tuesday's news ends a wildly disappointing tenure for McDaniels in Las Vegas that produced a 9-16 record over 25 games. After finishing 6-11 a year ago, the Raiders are only 3-5 through eight games this season. 

Aside from the poor record, the Raiders offense has been one of the worst in the NFL this season — a bad look for a supposed offensive genius like McDaniels — and has wasted an All-Pro wide receiver in Davante Adams and star running back in Josh Jacobs. 

After Monday's loss, the Raiders rank 31st in the NFL in points scored per game and 30th in yards gained per game. 

When the Raiders hired McDaniels prior to the 2022 season, they gave him a lucrative six-year contract to hopefully turn the team around and back into a contender. That contract still has four years remaining while the Raiders will still need to pay him the remainder of the salary.

His tenure with the Raiders is especially disappointing given that the team was in the playoffs the year before he was hired. It was during the 2021 season that Rich Bisaccia took over following the early-season departure of former head coach Jon Gruden and led the team to a 7-5 record under his watch. That was enough to convince team owner Mark Davis to keep him, prompting the hiring of McDaniels.

The big question now is whether or not McDaniels will get another head-coaching job in the NFL.

The Raiders were his second attempt at a head-coaching job following his disappointing tenure in Denver, and this one ended up going even worse. It was not just the fact that the Raiders were losing games. It was the way they were losing games, and some of the baffling decisions that McDaniels was making in games. 

The Raiders will host the New York Giants this Sunday in Las Vegas with a 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff.
