Las Vegas Raiders General Manager Dave Ziegler brought in several new pass catchers throughout free agency and the 2023 NFL Draft, in order to find players who will fit Coach Josh McDaniels’ system.

One of those players was wide receiver Phillip Dorsett, who spent three seasons with the New England Patriots, when McDaniels was the Offensive Coordinator.

Dorsett was a productive receiver with the Patriots, catching 73 passes for 881 yards and 12 touchdowns in three years. He also played well in the playoffs the year the Patriots won Super Bowl LIII, catching five passes for 70 yards and two touchdowns in three games in the postseason.

Dorsett joined the Raiders on a one-year contract, as many of his free agent receiver counterparts also did, as the Raiders made efforts to bring in depth at that position behind Davante Adams, Hunter Renfrow, and fellow free agent acquisition Jakobi Meyers.

Dorsett, who is entering his ninth season in the NFL, has always won his matchups with speed, so he adds that element to a Raiders’ offense that has a lot of different styles of receivers already.

He is an experienced player as well, and his experience can be crucial to young pass catchers on the team like Tre Tucker. He also has familiarity with McDaniels’ system, and he can help players in the system who are not as familiar.

Dorsett’s speed is important to the Raiders’ offense, as every team needs a receiver who can take the top off the defense. It makes defenses respect the deep game, and allows the other receivers to take advantage of how they are lined up.

While the Raiders brought in Dorsett to be a burner at the receiver spot, they brought him in to be more than that. He has been around the NFL for almost a decade now, and has won a Super Bowl in that time. His experience and familiarity with the system in place can prove to be invaluable and go beyond his impact on the field.

Dorsett’s addition to the Raiders’ wide receiver room is important for several reasons, but the most important of all may be the winning mindset he brings.
