Former MVP expands on advice to Giants' Tommy DeVito

Former New York Jets quarterback and one-time NFL Most Valuable Player Boomer Esiason recently advised New York Giants rookie signal-caller Tommy DeVito to "just worry about being the best player I could possibly be" and avoid possible distractions such as off-the-field public events. 

Esiason expanded on those comments during Wednesday's edition of the WFAN "Boomer and Gio" program. 

"The young man is a very nice young man, and seems to have all of his priorities in the right place," Esiason said about DeVito, as shared by Ryan Chichester of Audacy. "I would just again advise him, just play football, man. Stop with all this other crap off the field. You haven’t really done much. You have the opportunity of a lifetime. Don’t blow it. Don’t blow it because of idiot things like this off the field. Just focus in on being the best player you can be the next three weeks..."

While DeVito seemingly did well to clear up an issue regarding the supposed doubling of his appearance fee, Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post mentioned that the undrafted 25-year-old native of New Jersey completed three public appearances on Tuesday. 

Paul Schwartz of the New York Post mentioned that DeVito hired a new marketing agent earlier this month, but Esiason suggested that the first-year pro should've spent more time this week preparing for his start at what may be an angry 10-4 Philadelphia Eagles team on Christmas Day. 

"You gotta get away from all this nonsense off the field," Esiason added about DeVito. "You really do. You really haven’t done anything."

DeVito is 3-2 as a starter this season but completed 20-of-34 passes (58.8%) for 177 scoreless yards in this past Sunday's 24-6 loss at the New Orleans Saints that essentially knocked the 5-9 Giants out of postseason contention. One can't blame DeVito for making the most of his sudden fame, but he should realize he can quickly become a "whatever happened to" story if he plays poorly over the season's final three weeks.
