Falcons Cut Armstrong; Return Soon?

Atlanta Falcons cornerback Cornell Armstrong is not a member of the team's initial 53-man roster, according to his agent Brett Tessler.

Going into training camp, Armstrong was a likely fit for the roster, but injuries have sidelined him and prevented him from cementing his spot on the team.

“Cornell [Armstrong], somebody who’s been in our program, so you’re evaluating a lot stuff [based] on our experience with him and then, what we was doing in camp," coach Arthur Smith said. "But yeah, it’s tough. It’s unfortunate when guys do get injured. It’s less opportunities.”

Tessler tweeted that Armstrong is dealing with a strained hamstring, and he is expected to return sometime in the coming weeks.

Armstrong has been with the Falcons since 2021 and re-signed a one-year deal to stay with the team this offseason, but in a crowded cornerback room, he ended up on the outside looking in.

Last season, Armstrong played in nine games for the Falcons, starting four of them. He recorded 33 tackles and seven passes defensed, proving he has the ability to play in the NFL. However, it didn't save him from today's cuts.

The other 31 teams in the NFL will have a chance to claim Armstrong. However, if he goes unclaimed, there's a strong chance the Falcons bring him back to sign him to the practice squad ... and maybe even the active roster once he becomes healthy again.

The Falcons have until 4 p.m. today to cut the entire roster down to 53 players.
