Dolphins decide to waive this three-time Pro Bowl defender

The Miami Dolphins announced on Tuesday that they have waived veteran linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul. Miami is activating running back Chris Brooks off injured reserve in a corresponding move.

Pierre-Paul, 34, signed with the Dolphins late last month off the New Orleans Saints’ practice squad. He appeared in only two games for Miami though and did not record any statistics of note.

Once one of the top players at his position, Pierre-Paul has two Super Bowl rings (with the New York Giants and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers). He made Pro Bowl teams in 2011 and 2012 and then experienced a nice resurgence after his infamous fireworks accident that cost him part of his right hand. 

Pierre-Paul logged 9.5 sacks, 55 combined tackles, and four forced fumbles in his last full NFL season in 2020 with the Bucs, getting a third Pro Bowl nod. He then went on to make 13 fairly productive starts last year for the Baltimore Ravens.

As for the AFC East-leading Dolphins, they just signed another former Pro Bowl pass-rusher several days ago. With the team needing to free up a roster spot to activate a player off IR, Pierre-Paul’s services are no longer required.
