Dan Orlovsky contradicts Stephen A. Smith by claiming Cowboys drafting a QB with Dak Prescott already on the team would mean they’ve given up on the season

Lately, there have been a lot of debates on the Dallas Cowboys’ next move, which is the 2024 NFL draft. Coming off the season, where Dak Prescott led the team to the NFC East title entering the playoffs, everyone expected a lucrative extension for him.

But then, one game happened and the Cowboys’ Super Bowl dream was crushed to the ground (once again) and so did Prescott’s potential extension. Amidst the unresolved contract situation of their three-star players, the Cowboys are widely focusing on the draft as it could bring in the potential successor of quarterback Prescott.

The recent episode of the First Take seems to be having the same debate on whether the Cowboys should draft a quarterback using their picks in the first round or not. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith suggested that the Cowboys should definitely draft a young quarterback with whom they can get to the postseason, then it resolves Prescott’s extension problem as the former equaled what the latter did, but cheaper.

Damn right, you [the Cowboys] should consider getting somebody that’s younger. Somebody that’s capable of stepping right in.  said Stephen A. Smith

Dan Orlovsky highlights the implications of selecting a quarterback by Cowboys in the upcoming draft

However, his fellow analyst Dan Orlovsky seems to suggest otherwise. He claimed it would mean the Cowboys have given up on the hope of winning the Super Bowl.

I don’t think they should take a quarterback. Candidly, if they take a quarterback, then they've just given up on the season--They only have three picks in the top 175 picks of the NFL draft. Even if they hit on all three of those players, they're still down two positions when it comes to being a playoff-contending football team. Dan Orlovsky said

Orlovsky highlighted if they use one of those picks on a quarterback, it would be like waving the white flag to their Super Bowl dream, this era, and everything they have done so far. It would suggest the Cowboys have given up on the hope of the Super Bowl and they may never recover from it.
