Chargers seem like same old Chargers after 0-2 start

Every year the Los Angeles Chargers are a popular pick to make a deep run in the AFC playoffs.

They always have a franchise quarterback (Justin Herbert is the latest), always have a roster that looks great on paper and always seem to fare well statistically when compared to the rest of the league.

The only thing they do not do well is actually win football games. Not only do they not win, they seem to go out of their way to invent new ways to lose. That has continued through the first two weeks of the 2023 NFL season, where they now are off to an 0-2 start after Sunday's 27-24 overtime loss to the Tennessee Titans.

That loss came on a day when Herbert threw for over 300 yards and two touchdowns without being intercepted, the team kept Tennessee's best player -- Derrick Henry -- to under 100 yards and jumped out to an 11-point lead on the road. Given the two rosters and the early two-score lead, the Chargers should have been well-positioned to get their first win of the season.

It still was not enough. The latest blown lead comes after a Week 1 loss against Miami in which they allowed 36 points and lost in large part because of a completely undisciplined penalty at the end of the first half that gave the Dolphins a free three points. On Sunday, the offense went 2-for-14 on third downs and came up completely empty in overtime, while the defense was gashed for more big plays against a Tennessee offense that is not built to make them.

The Chargers now find themselves at 0-2 and already facing a huge mountain to climb in a stacked AFC loaded with some of the best teams in the NFL.

At this point if you are still picking the Chargers at the start of the season, the obvious question has to simply be – why?

It is not like this is a team that wins double-digit games every year and keeps getting to the Divisional Round or AFC Championship Game. This is a team that has made the playoffs just three times in the past 13 years and so far only once in the first three full years of Herbert's career. The one time they did it make it – the 2022 season – they suffered one of the most embarrassing playoff losses in NFL history when they blew a 27-0 lead against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

They have not yet recovered early this season.

Not only are they facing an 0-2 start, their upcoming schedule features a road game at the Minnesota Vikings, a home game against the Las Vegas Raiders and (following a bye week) games against the Kansas City Chiefs and at the Dallas Cowboys.

Realistically speaking they will only be favored in one of those upcoming four games. It is not a stretch to think they could find themselves at 2-4 or 1-5 after that gauntlet and potentially on their way to another massive disappointment of a season.

New year. Same old Chargers.
