Chargers Agree To Restructured Deal With Joey Bosa
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Chargers managed to keep edge rusher Khalil Mack on a restructured deal, and they have been able to do the same thing with fellow sack artist Joey Bosa.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Chargers have revised Bosa’s contract, which will benefit Los Angeles from a salary cap perspective and keep Bosa in LA.

As with Mack, there was some speculation that the Bolts could potentially trade Bosa, but they ultimately decided to retain him.

Of course, whether or not that is the right move long term is debatable given what has occurred with Bosa the last couple of seasons.

Bosa has played in a combined 14 games since 2022 due to different injury issues. This past season, a foot injury limited him to nine contests, and he underwent surgery during the middle of the season to repair the ailment.

There is no doubting that Bosa is still productive when he plays. During his limited time on the field in 2023, he posted 20 tackles, 6.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

However, Bosa’s inability to actually stay healthy is becoming more and more of a problem for the Chargers, as he has not played a full campaign since 2019.

The 28-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State, was selected by Los Angeles with the third overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft.

He won Defensive Rookie of the Year after rattling off 41 tackles and 10.5 sacks, and overall, Bosa has logged double-digit sacks four times in eight seasons. He set a career-high with 12.5 back in 2017.

Bosa has made four trips to the Pro Bowl, most recently doing so in 2021 after registering 51 tackles, 10.5 sacks and seven passes defened.

We’ll see if Joey Bosa can avoid injury in 2024.
