Broncos GM George Paton on Russell Wilson extension: 'At the right time, we’ll get a deal done'

The Denver Broncos sent shockwaves throughout the NFL community when they completed a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks for star quarterback and one-time Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson in March.

Wilson remains signed only through the 2023 season, and it was reported this spring that the Broncos weren't "in any rush" to lock the 33-year-old down on a long-term deal and hadn't "begun negotiations on a new contract" as of that time. Per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk, Denver general manager George Paton was asked during a Tuesday press conference if the two sides have discussed an extension ahead of August and upcoming preseason games.

"We all want Russell here a long time," Paton explained about the situation. "I appreciate the question. Out of respect for his team, our team, we’re just going to keep it in-house. Any decisions we may or may not have. I have a really good relationship with Russ' agent, Mark Rogers, and at the right time, we’ll get a deal done."

Kyler Murray of the Arizona Cardinals recently became the latest signal-caller to get paid in a big way this offseason. His deal carries an average annual value of $46.1 million. Regardless of Wilson's age and recent injury history, he may look to equal or better that value via what may be the final massive contract of his career.
