Baltimore Ravens sign former Steelers CB Arthur Maulet
Jessica Rapfogel-USA TODAY Sports

The Baltimore Ravens have signed free agent cornerback Arthur Maulet to a one-year contract, NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe reported Tuesday. Maulet spent the past two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers before being released this offseason prior to OTAs.

Maulet played all 33 games for the Steelers in 2021 and 2022, making eight starts. He recorded 106 tackles (seven for loss), two sacks, two forced fumbles, one interception and four passes defended in that span. That included a career-high 59 tackles, two sacks, an interception and a forced fumble this past season.

Maulet reportedly asked for his release from Pittsburgh due to a contract dispute. He was set to enter the second year of a two-year, $3.825 million contract extension and was set to make a $1.79 million base salary in 2023 with a cap hit of $2.29 million. It’s not yet clear what he will make with in Baltimore.

By joining the Ravens, Maulet will get the opportunity to face off against the Steelers twice this season on Oct. 8 and Jan. 7. He is expected to arrive in Baltimore this evening, one day before the team begins training camp on Wednesday.

Maulet should compete for the Ravens’ starting nickel cornerback job, the same position he played in Pittsburgh. Baltimore has an opening there with Kyle Hamilton, who started at nickel cornerback during his rookie season, set to move to safety. Maulet will have competition in the form of Pepe Williams and Ar’Darius Washington for the job. However, Williams will begin training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

Maulet played college football for Memphis and began his NFL career in 2017 after signing as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints. He appeared in six games as a rookie but recorded only one tackle.

The Saints later waived Maulet before the 2018 season and he played for the Indianapolis Colts and New York Jets before joining the Steelers in 2021. Overall for his career, Maulet has 183 tackles (12 for loss), three sacks, three interceptions and 11 passes defended.

Set to enter his seventh NFL season, it will be interesting to see how the cornerback fits in on the Ravens defense. Baltimore is coming off of a 10-7 finish this past season and loss in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. The team ranked 14th in yards allowed per play (5.3) and tied for 12th in interceptions (14).

The Ravens will kick off the 2023 regular season on Sept. 10 at home against the Houston Texans.
