Agent of kicker Wil Lutz puts Saints on blast for 'poor decision'

While NFL teams were in the midst of cutting down their rosters to 53 players this week, numerous trades occurred throughout the NFL.

One that may have gone slightly overlooked was actually a bit of a surprise, as the New Orleans Saints opted to trade kicker Wil Lutz to the Denver Broncos, meaning he had lost the roster competition to Blake Grupe.

For the Broncos, they surely feel good about picking up an experienced kicker in Lutz, who was with the Saints since 2016 and has made 84.6% of his field goal attempts. But it appears Lutz's agent, John Perla, believes his client didn't actually lose the kicking competition to Grupe.

As Denver Gazette's Chris Tomasson revealed, Lutz's agent said that he didn't lose the job but instead that the Saints made a poor decision.

“He didn’t lose his job. The Saints just made a poor decision. The better player is not the one who is left on the Saints’ roster, I’ll tell you that.” Perla said, per Tomasson.

Lutz did convert on his lowest percentage of field goal attempts in 2022, making 23 of 31 attempts (74.2%). His best single season came in 2018 when he made 93.3% of his attempts (28 of 30), but since that year, Lutz has seen that number fall in each season.

It's a fresh start for the 29-year-old in a kicker-friendly environment, which should bode well for his big leg, and it wouldn't be surprising if we see a big bounce back season from Lutz in 2023.
