49ers Linked to Ex-Packers Pro Bowl CB
Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

There has been a lot of quarterback drama for the San Francisco 49ers this summer, and there’s no denying that the front office has poured in a lot of time and effort in making sure that their issues at QB are (somewhat) resolved before the start of the new season.

Be that as it may, there are still one or two areas within the roster that the Niners could improve on before the new season starts. One of them could be the cornerback position, which as of the moment, might require additional depth for San Francisco.

NFL Rumors: 49ers Linked to Former Packers CB Casey Hayward

Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Reports suggests that the Niners consider two-time Pro Bowler Casey Hayward as an option at CB. The veteran still remains without a team after failing to secure a new deal with the Atlanta Falcons, and he could be the answer to the Niners’ depth concerns.

“Casey Hayward is starting to age out of the league at nearly 34 years old, but he was solid in six games with the Atlanta Falcons last season. His inside-out versatility would make him a smart addition to the Niners’ secondary,” Ballentine wrote.

It goes without saying that Hayward is no longer the star he once was. The Green Bay Packers’ former second-round pick is in his twilight years already, and he’s not going to be taking San Francisco by storm if the Niners sign him. However, he could be a useful addition to the squad, as they look to shore up their rotation behind the likes of Isaiah Oliver and Deommodore Lenoir. Moreover, Hayward also has experience playing LCB, and his versatility will give the Niners coaching staff more options.

While signing Hayward will come with some risk, this move could still pay dividends for the Niners. He seems to be a good fit with the team’s defensive schemes — at least on paper — and his ability to press on both the inside and the outside could give him even more value for the team. Finally, Hayward’s experience is also something he can use to help mentor the younger backs on the squad who will be looking to their vets to help them reach their potential in the NFL.
