Phil Nevin Has High Expectations for Chase Silseth’s MLB Career
USA TODAY Sports

Friday night was the long-awaited return to the mound for Angels starting pitcher Chase Silseth after he missed the last month with a concussion. He was hit in the back of the head, and it cost him the last few weeks of the season.

But he made his return against the Oakland Athletics and looked good during it. He went four innings, allowing one earned run and struck out three. It was a game that showed the potential he has, albeit against the lowly A’s.

“I thought he threw the ball well,” Nevin said. “His tempo was good. He set the tone for the game.”

Per The OC Register

It’s been an up-and-down year for Silseth, but he has been much better in the second half of the season. It seems that he found something that has worked, and he started consistently putting it into his outings.

“Silseth posted a 3.96 ERA in 52⅓ innings, but that included a first half in which he was bounced between the rotation and bullpen several times. Once he returned from Triple-A in July with a simplified repertoire of pitches and a spot in the rotation, he had a 3.21 ERA. Two of his three victories were against the Atlanta Braves and Houston Astros.”

Per Jeff Fletcher of The OC Register

He looks to be a staple in the Angels rotation next season, and he can take this performance into the offseason to continue getting better. The 23-year-old pitcher still has room to grow, and manager Phil Nevin believes that he has what it takes to be successful in the major leagues.

“I think he’s understood what it takes to have his body in shape to pitch deep into games,” Nevin said. “He’s got a chance to be a very good pitcher in this league. He already is. We know what he has and you hear things from other coaches, other managers. Players talk and you overhear that. He’s got the stuff and makeup to be very, very good.”

Per The OC Register

Silseth has stuff that works in the majors, and he will look to keep growing his game. He wants to be successful in helping the Angels win more games next season, so this offseason will be key for him to build on his craft.
