NCAAF Bowls: Best bets for Friday, Dec. 29

We are inching closer to New Year's Day and the College Football Playoffs, I swear. If you are "jonesing" for some college football action until then, here is a look at Friday's bowls as you start contemplating resolutions you will never keep, both betting and otherwise.

Friday, Dec. 29

Gator Bowl
Noon ET
Clemson Tigers vs. Kentucky Wildcats
Best Bet: Tigers -5.5

I am not sure what the future of the Clemson football is. Their run as a truly elite program might be done. Nevertheless, they can still line up enough quality players to compete with Kentucky anytime, anywhere. We are right to malign the Tigers and be disappointed overall, but they are far from a dreg in the ACC. Kentucky coach Mark Stoops runs a tough physical program, but I do not think they are going to catch the Tigers unprepared in this spot. Clemson finished the season on a four-game winning streak and unlike some top programs that have been forced to scramble they are playing their quarterback of the future now in Cade Klubnik.

Sun Bowl
Oregon State Beavers vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

2 p.m. ET
Best Bet: Fighting Irish -6.5

I loved the fact that Jonathan Smith had success at Oregon State. I was not surprised that he left the Beavers, but was surprised he did it for Michigan State. Nevertheless, it is really hard to know just what the Beavers are right now, so even though the motivation should be high to take on Notre Dame, they do not have the team that helped them build a successful season in Corvallis. Situations like these are ones where program depth is so critical. Notre Dame, with no playoff to be preparing for, has lost some players too but the talent base they are starting from is significantly deeper, and they have not had major leadership changes at head coach to deal with with either. This one could be very ugly for the Beavers.

Liberty Bowl
3:30 p.m. ET
Iowa State Cyclones vs. Memphis Tigers
Best Bet: Tigers +9.5

For starters, playing in the Liberty Bowl should be an advantage for the Tigers. Iowa State did have a better-than-expected season in the Big 12 this year though, they closed the season with four road wins (and covers) in a row but I am not comfortable they are going to blitz the Tigers and win with margin. For years, ISU head coach Matt Campbell was at the top of the list of coaches that were going to move on to bigger and better things, but now not so much (which is surprising given all of the Brock Purdy love we see now). I think the Cyclones can flex a little, but this is a very good Memphis team who only lost to SMU, Tulane and Mizzou this season. The Tigers are in the top 10 in scoring offense and even if they give up some points early they can come back and win for us through the backdoor.

Cotton Bowl
Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Mizzou Tigers
8 p.m. ET
Best Bet: Ohio State -1.5

I don’t know what is going on at Ohio State. Quarterback Kyle McCord may not have the talent of some of their recent stars at the position, but I am not sure why they are essentially running him out of town. They are not going to field the same lineup of players that they used against Michigan in their most recent game, but there is still enough talent for them to compete with a Mizzou team that has overachieved this season. The Tigers won 10 games but it was more with grittiness and determination. This is still a team that barely beat Middle Tennessee way back when. Ohio State could deliver a “B” game and still win. With such a short number to cover that is all we need.
