Mississippi State OLB Tyrus Wheat Visiting With Green Bay Packers Ahead of 2023 NFL Draft
USA TODAY Sports

Former Mississippi State outside linebacker Tyrus Wheat is taking a top-30 visit with the Green Bay Packers ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft, according to a report from Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Wheat was considered one of MSU's most underrated players ahead of the 2022 season and projects as a prospect who could prove to be a steal after being quietly effective for the Bulldogs on multiple occasions. He's largely projected to be an early Day 3 pick.

The 24-year-old finished out the 2022 season with 54 combined tackles (25 solo), six sacks, two passes defended and one interception. Over three seasons in Starkville, he totaled 130 combined tackles (46 solo), 18 sacks, six passes defended, three forced fumbles and three interceptions.

Wheat recorded a 40-yard dash time of 4.65 seconds, a time of 4.54 seconds in the short shuttle, put up a 9-5 in the board jump and hit 28.5″ in the vertical leap. According to measurements as Mississippi State's pro day, his wingspan was over 80".

If selected by the Packers, Wheat would join the likes of edge rushers Kingsley Enagbare, Rashan Gary and Preston Smith and could develop into a larger role over time.

It will be interesting to see how things play out for Wheat when teams are officially on the clock this week.
