Ranking The Unsigned Veterans
A number of proven NHL commodities remain unsigned as NHL teams begin their preparations for training camp.
Among them is destined Hall of Famer Teemu Selanne, who is still deciding whether to play another year for the Ducks after a stellar 2010-11 season. His decision should come within the next two weeks -- but expect him to return, since Anaheim opens the season in Helsinki.
For GMs looking to do some bargain bin shopping, here is how they stack up:
Bryan McCabe, D: Physical imposing defensemen with offensive ability are at a premium in the NHL. He had 28 points in 67 Rangers games last season. He has turned down training camp invites while waiting for a guaranteed deal to come his way. Once somebody gets hurt, that could happen.
Cory Stillman, W: Put him on a scoring line and he'll still produce, even at the age of 37. As NHL.com points out, he scored 16 points in 21 games for the Hurricanes last spring.
Ray Emery, GT: He showed very well for Anaheim last season and is going to camp with the Blackhawks. He could become an absolute steal for Chicago if he signs on to replace ineffective Marty Turco as the back-up.
Anton Stralman, D: He is young, just 25, and he has a 34-point season on his resume. But his dismal 2010-11 season could force him back to Europe.
Chris Campoli, D: He is a decent puck-mover capable of filling a third-pairing hole for a team that encounters injury problems. He scored 21 points in 77 games for the Blackhawks last season.
