It’s true. Lindy Ruff is no longer coaching the Buffalo Sabres. Ron Rolston moved up from Rochester of the AHL to fill the post on an interim basis.
Hockey fans are struggling to comprehend a world where Ruff is not behind Buffalo bench, glaring at his troops.
Here is how the Twitterverse reacted:
Adam Proteau, The Hockey News: “When Lindy Ruff was hired, we still had Steve Jobs, Johnny Cash & Bob Hope. Now we just have millions of people who hate this joke structure.”
Dave Hodge, TSN: “Barry Trotz knew Lindy Ruff had been fired when the Guinness Book called to check the spelling of his name.”
Down Goes Brown: “If Terry Pegula negotiates severance packages the way he does signing bonuses, Lindy Ruff can now purchase all of Buffalo.”
Chris Johnston, Rogers Sportsnet: “End of an era: There were 170 NHL coaching changes from the time Lindy Ruff was hired by the #sabres in July 1997 and fired today.”
Bruce Garrioch, Ottawa Sun: “So, who fires their coach so they can hire Lindy Ruff? It happened with Bruce Boudreau.”
Doug MacLean, Rogers Sportsnet: “One of the best coaches in the NHL is now available. Lindy Ruff. Great friendand a great person. Any GM considering a change fill your boots.”
Aaron Portzline, Columbus Dispatch: “#CBJ in last place, yes, and Lindy Ruff is one heck of a coach. But I don't get the sense that coach Todd Richards is in immediate jeopardy.”
Pierre LeBrun, ESPN.com: “Lindy Ruff will re-emerge just like Randy Carlyle and a year from now we'll be writing stories on what a great hire Ruff was. And it will be true.”
