Let the overhaul in Montreal begin.
General manager Pierre “The Ghost” Gauthier has moved on down the trail, as expected. Apparently he jumped before getting pushed.
Interim coach Randy Cunneyworth will play out the string while pondering his own future. He didn’t deliever results after tagging in for coach Jacques Martin.
This storied franchise sunk to dead last in the Eastern Conference. It has richly earned his spot in the coming NHL Draft lottery.
The Canadiens need to start over with strong new leadership. The formula of committing huge dollars to marginal players somehow didn’t work.
Bob Gainey shares in the responsibility for this franchise’s demise. So it was not surprising to see Canadiens principal owner Geoff Molson force him out of the front office as well. Habs legend Serge Savard moved into the fold as an advisor.
Former Canadiens goaltender Patrick Roy is a front office option, despite his attempts to chill such chatter. A more sensible GM choice would be Lightning assistant GM Julien BrisBois, a long-time member of the Montreal organization.
Before becoming Steve Yzerman’s right-hand man in Tampa, BriseBois was GM of Montreal's AHL affiliate, the Hamilton Bulldogs.
The next GM will have to score big with the high first-round draft pick, secure goaltender Carey Price with a new long-term deal and shed some of the franchise’s burdensome salaries.
The task will be enormous.
