Yesteryear goal scorer Dany Heatley is useless these days.
Minnesota Wild coach Mike Yeo finally conceded that point by benching him as a healthy scratch for a critical stretch run game. “We’re not done with him,” Yeo told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “We’re going to need him again.”
OK, so Heatley is virtually useless. He does have 12 goals and 15 assists this season, but that isn’t great production for alleged scoring winger earning $7.5 million per season.
Heatley, 33, still has the talent to make a difficult. But his motivation left him a long, long time ago – perhaps back in Ottawa, where he demanded a trade back in 2009.
The Ottawa Sun speculates that Heatley might get one more chance on a one-year, $1 million deal somewhere next season. But veterans are finding it increasingly difficult to land even modest deals in today's NHL.
Teams are more reluctant to make even modest investments in twilight year free agents.
