Say, whatever became of Mike Ribeiro?
The veteran NHL center was supposed to provide offensive support for the Phoenix Coyotes. He had excelled in his previous time with coach Dave Tippett with the Dallas Stars.
He did pretty solid work for the Washington Capitals behind tip center Nicklas Backstrom. The Coyotes invested $22 million over four years into his playmaking ability, believing his skill and experience could bolster a youngish team.
And then Ribeiro vanished offensively. He has scored just one goal since Feb. 1 and he has produced just five assists in that span.
He literally disappeared from the lineup as a healthy scratch in recent games as the Coyotes fought for their playoff lives.
This offseason offers teams one last chance to use the “compliance buyout” mechanism to ditch unwanted contracts. Coyotes management may have to take that plunge.
