Brent Sutter destined to replace Tom Renney ?
The Edmonton Oilers have done lots and lots of teaching. Now it’s time to do some winning.
So general manager Steve Tambellini finally got around to firing coach Tom Renney. The move has been expected since the end of the regular season, but first Tambellini had to firm up his own future.
This will be a prime job, given the high-end talent in place. Who doesn’t want to coach Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall, et al?
The Edmonton Sun nominated Brent Sutter for the job, noting the work he did with several Oilers at the World Championships. He coached Team Canada which, as luck would have it, was run by Oilers president Kevin Lowe.
Sutter’s appointment was widely viewed as an Oilers test drive. Although Team Canada didn’t advance in the World Championships, he impressed the Edmonton brass with his handling of players.
